Crimea. Dawn. Chufut-kale.

Painting, 38×2.5×48 cm

Description of the artwork «Crimea. Dawn. Chufut-kale.»

Crimea. Dawn on Chufut-Kale. Oil on canvas, 2018.
One of the largest cave settlements of the Crimea - Chufut-Kale - is just three kilometers from the Bakhchsarai Palace. Presumably this medieval city originated in the V-VI centuries as Byzantine fortification. The proximity to Bakhchisaray makes it one of the most visited places on the peninsula.
The natural landscape and the walls provided security for the settlement, it was not easy to get here. The only way is a mountain path that connected the inhabitants with the rest of the world.
The first inhabitants of the caves were the Alans, a powerful Sarmatian tribe and allies of Byzantium, who settled in the mountainous Crimea. Mention of settlement in these places has been found in written sources from the 13th century. The fortress on the impregnable mountain was known under the Turkish name Kyrk-Or.
