Art-Bread

Выставка 13 − 18 декабря 2019
“Art Bread" opens on december 13th at 17:00 pm at the National Museum of Bread at 19 Vyshgorodskaya st.
Second location opens at Hlebzawod at 20:00.
The Hlebzawod Contemporary Art Center was spontaneously organized on the territory of the former Bakery # 7. Since 2016, these space becomes artists’ studios which during time have self-organized into grassroots art institution. By organizing actions, competitions and lectures, opening exhibitions of fellows on its territory (artist-run space), this artistic community builds its own socio-cultural space and does not enter into relations with the state and the oligarchy. It creates its grassroots cultural activity without the need for self-reflection and criticism of its own processes, but with great potential for organizing and creating new projects.
Hlebzawod CAC participants consciously or willfully don`t associate their personal practice with other institutes/galleries, but remains true to their community and develop their own culture. And, probably, the images of yeast culture become synonymous with the activities of CAC - in the most minimal ifs arises such blusterous activity.
The main theme of Hlebzawod is the Soviet heritage in the full spectrum of its manifestations. From history, culture, architecture to politics, memory and citizens` mentality to post-Soviet realities of modernity and existence in ruins.
Art-Bread Biennale
The organization of the biennial as a large-scale exhibition which helds every two years, is a remarkable statement of the young institution about the intentions of methodical long-term work. The bienniale itself - "Art-Bread" - " Hlebzawod" interweave its institutional code, with which he has repeatedly worked in the following projects: "Movable/Unmovable", "Hlebzawod Art Prize", "Bread conversion" and many other. It tirelessly works out and problematize the image of bread as one of the fundamental basis of Ukrainian culture. That is why one of the locations of the biennial will be the Bread Museum, located in the National Ecological and Naturalistic Center on the 19 Vyshgorodskaya street. There artists will be given the opportunity to work with the context of the Bread Museum and a children's educational institution both organized back in Soviet times. The second location of the biennale is the CAC “Hlebzawod” on the 65b Kirillovskaya street. By placing the project in two locations, the Hlebzawod community works in the usual tradition of large exhibitions, where locations are scattered throughout the urban space and builds new cultural routes by the event.
The Art-Bread biennale raises questions that have been repeatedly reflected in the Hlebzawod projects: rethinking the post-Soviet heritage history and myths. Project participants are a generation that grew up partly during Soviet rule or brought up by parents who were formed by the Soviet culture; they were educated in institutes founded in Soviet times. Would it be appropriate to simply forget the past story and move on? Is it reasonable to brand hanger and thief with all the figures of that time as one? Only by working out and critically reflecting on the present is it possible to form our own position on history and reality, as well as redefine the values of the past.

The project was performed with the “Khlibniy Dar” company and local partners support.
