Vika Shumskaya | Salt Water Book. Part 1.

In my previous projects, I simulated the chemical processes affecting photographs, documents from my family archive. It was destroyed by salt and dust and thus referenced the processes of collective history of the 20th century – its most critical moments, the issues of society’s collective memory. I had to work with the memory of a collective body, even on the level of non-linguistic analysis.
In the book Salt Water, I decided that my art should be directly confronted with natural chemical processes, referring to collective erosion and collective amnesia.
Here in Montenegro, Kotor, I began a new part of this big series. Artificially attempting to recreate these natural processes, I subjected my paintings to reactions with the oxygen and salt of the Mediterranean.
