Thomas Gainsborough. The modern landscape

In the spring of 2018, the Kunsthalle Hamburg is Germany's first large-scale monographic exhibition English painter Thomas Gainsborough. The exhibition, which includes about 80 exhibits, including about 40 paintings and 40 works on paper, demonstrates the master as a pioneer of painting in that period.

Gainsborough preferred to depict the portraits on the background landscapes. It gave room for experimenting with new materials and technologies, allowing the artist to constantly develop your style. He came to fame on the wave of research that swept England in the eighteenth century and made the leading economic and political force in Europe. At the same time, the contribution of the painter helped transform the Kingdom into a major European art centre.

The exhibition presents works from leading collections, including the National gallery, the Tate gallery, the Victoria and albert Museum, Institute of fine arts Barber, of the Berlin State museums, Bavarian state collections of paintings, as well as private collections. Among the exhibits – paintings such as "Portrait of the couple Andrews" and "the Watering hole", which is considered a cult classic in the English-speaking world.
