Exhibition September 10, 2019 − January 5, 2020
Berlin Art Gallery Presents Research Exhibition "Peter Brueghel the Elder: Two monkeys. Research and reconstruction of the creative process".

Peter Brueghel the Elder died 450 years ago, on September 9, 1569. Seven years earlier, he had signed and dated a small mysterious panel, Two Monkeys.

How did a small picture of Peter Bruegel come about? Based on various methods of technical expertise and archival sources, it was possible to reconstruct the creation of the picture. Technical analysis of the panel using a stereo microscope, ultraviolet radiation, X-ray and infrared reflectography, as well as X-ray fluorescence analysis at the micro and macro levels made it possible to identify the various pigments used and to identify the process of making the picture.

Based on this information, the step-by-step process of creating a picture was reproduced as accurately as possible in a series of realistic panels.
