Expressionist figure: 100 years of contemporary design
Exhibition November 17, 2019 − April 19, 2020
Onexhibition about 100 papers on paper are presented that reveal the expressive potential of the human body. In this richly diverse presentation, viewers will find portraiture, social satire, storytelling, fantasy and eroticism in a variety of environments - from chalk, ink and graphite to watercolors, pastels and collages. Drawings span over a century of artistic experimentation, starting with an exquisite coal study of the French impressionist Edgar Degas performed around 1900, and ending with a parody of The Wizard of Oz, made in 2015 by Minnesota artist Jim Denomi.
Among 73 artists at the exhibition: Max Beckman, Chuck Close, Brett Cook-Disney, Willem de Kooning, Edgar Degas, Jim Denomi, Otto Dix, Marlene Dumas, Arshile Gorky, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, William Kentridge, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt, Rene Magritte, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Elizabeth Peyton, Pablo Picasso, Sigmar Polke, Egon Schiele, Ben Shah, Zach Smith, Rosemary Trockel, Cara Walker and Andy Warhol.
