William Trost Richards: Landscape Hieroglyphs
Exhibition September 9 − December 8, 2019
This is the first exhibition dedicated to the monographic study of the art of William Trost Richards (1833–1905) in Boston, from his early sketches and exemplary pre-Raphaelite art of the 1860s to his late masterpieces of landscapes.
In particular, the landscapes of Richards are revealed in the context of the growing awareness of the nineteenth century for the environment. The exhibition shows how Richards' works reflect the hieroglyphic interpretation of nature by romantics and reflect the nascent scientific discoveries of modern geologists who revolutionized understanding of evolution and history.
At the exhibition "William Trost Richards: Landscape Hieroglyphs"more than 180 paintings, watercolors, drawings and albums, including many rare works belonging to the descendants of the artist.
