Max Ernst. Paris years

Exhibition June 15 − August 18, 2019
The State Hermitage Museum presents an exhibition. “Max Ernst. Paris years ", organized with the support of the British Hermitage Foundation. The exhibition is held in the Twelve Column Hall of the New Hermitage.

Max Ernst (1891-1976) - an outstanding German and French artist, a prominent representative of the art of the twentieth century.

The exhibition is dedicated to a short but key period in the life and work of the artist - the 1920s, which Ernst spent in France. This time marked the transition from Dadaism to surrealism - both in the works of Ernst and in all European art, which certainly became the most important event for world art. The exhibits allow us to trace how the artist is gradually moving away from Dada towards the search for a more poetic and holistic artistic image, which, in turn, turns into a surrealistic paradox.

The basis of the exhibition consisted of twenty paintings from the collection of the first Parisian dealer of the artist - Aram Muradyan. These works complement three more works of the same period from other private collections. The exposition also includes the footage from the album "Natural History", provided by the St. Petersburg collector Mark Bashmakov.
