Morgan Library and Museum presents an exhibition "Hogarth: cruelty and humor".
The satirical scenes of the famous English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of eighteenth-century city life during times of great socio-economic inequality. An academic outsider and activist, Hogarth was forced to innovate, creating new genres and ways of expression in his painting, printing and drawing, trying to raise the status of British art.
This exhibition explores how the artist uses humor, satire and political commentary to attract a wide audience and campaign for legislative and political goals.
