Russian North

Exhibition December 5, 2018 − May 20, 2019
The State Historical Museum hosts an exhibition "Russian North".

The exhibition tells about a very special and multifaceted culture of the northern lands of the European part of the country. Over the centuries, there has been a unique everyday lifestyle, a special, incomparable atmosphere, in which various Russian folk arts and crafts have received tremendous development. This harsh land has always been famous for clever carving and painting on wood.

The exhibition presents wooden scoops ñ skopari, boxes, salt-pans, bark, spinning wheels, as well as items from one of the largest centers of the 19th-century painting, which was located in the Permorye area on the Northern Dvina.

Also among the exhibits are women's suits and hats of the Olonets, Kargopol, Arkhangelsk provinces of the XVIII - the middle of the XIX century, because it is the national costume that is the basis of any culture.
The art of the Russian North existed and developed in close connection with the church. Among the key exhibits is the exact carved "list" of the image of Nikolai Mozhaisky, mentioned in the chronicle.

Veliky Ustyug was the main center of the "northern mob" - a peculiar and unique engraving on metal, often silver. In these products, as well as in other folk crafts, the influence of styles in the art of the XVIII-XIX centuries is traced.

The northern lands were famous not only for their visual, decorative and applied arts, but also for the monuments of ancient Russian literature. The beauty of the decoration of manuscripts, miniatures, and initials transform many printed works into real works of art.
