Biography and information

Peter Vasilievich Basin — (1793, St. Petersburg — 1877, ibid) — Russian religious, historical and portrait painter, academician (since 1830), honored professor of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Grandfather of the historian N. Grushka.
Petr Vasilievich Basin was born in 1793 in St. Petersburg. He served in the expedition of state revenues of the Ministry of Finance. From 1811, he attended drawing classes of the Academy of Arts as a volunteer; in 1813 he entered the Academy as a student, mastered the artistic skills under the guidance of Professor V. K. Shebuev. In 1818, Bassin received a large gold medal and the right to a pensioner’s stay abroad at the expense of the Academy for the program picture "Christ drives out the church traders".
11 years old Bassin spent in Rome, copied works by Raphael ("The Apostle Peter’s Exemption from Prison", "The Bolsena Miracle", "Apollo and the Muses" from the papal palace, and also "The Sibyl [it]") and Domenichino ("The Communion of St. Jerome", frescoes with the lives of St. Nile of Grottaferrata). In the same period, a series of early original works of Basin are created — both on academic mythological subjects ("Fawn Marsyus teaches the young man Olympia to play the flute", "Fawn and Nymph"), and on more realistic, genre themes ("Italian Robber", " The earthquake in Rocca di Papa, near Rome "," Laundresses hanging clothes "), as well as portraits of S.S. Shchedrin and members of the family of Colonel Lorer.
In the years 1826−1828, Bassin paints the painting Socrates in the Battle of Potidea protects Alkibiades. After the successful display of this picture in Rome, the picture was sent by sea to St. Petersburg, but the ship carrying it crashed, and the canvas was badly damaged. When returning home (where he was summoned by Emperor Nicholas I to work on the construction of St. Isaac’s Cathedral), Basin restored the picture and presented it to the Academy of Arts. In 1830, for this work, Bassin received the title of academician, soon began teaching, received in 1836 the title of professor of the second degree, in 1846 — professor of the first degree, and in 1856 — honored professor in portrait and historical painting. From 1859 he taught in a full-scale class. In 1869, in the rank of state councilor, he left the department due to progressive eye disease.
Although Bassin worked a lot as a portrait painter, he gained fame thanks to the monumental works in churches and secular public buildings, including the St. Isaac’s Cathedral, for which he created up to forty images and pictures of religious content, of all the artists who worked in the cathedral, performing the largest amount murals. Bassin wrote down the sketches of Bryullov on the ceiling of the main dome of the cathedral, created the composition "The Sermon on the Mount" over the southern doors, "The Judgment of Judah" and "The Carrying of the Cross" on the central attic (ibid also "Bee Man" and "The Flagellation" for Bryullov), completely painted chapels of sv. Alexander Nevsky and sv. Catherine. In the Kazan Cathedral Bassin wrote "Introduction to the temple." In the Church of the Academy of Arts, he created the altarpiece "The Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles" (which the Russian Biographical Dictionary defines as "the best work of the artist") and several images for iconostasis, and the ceiling in the Academy’s library. For the Church of the Winter Palace, Bassin wrote the Resurrection of Christ, created portraits of Kutuzov and Dibich for the Field Marshals' Hall, and mythological figures for the Pompeii Hall. Works Basin decorated cathedrals in Peterhof and Tiflis. Basin’s paintings were included in the collections of the Academy of Fine Arts (primarily from the Roman period), the Museum of Emperor Alexander III, and the Moscow Public Museum. At the end of his life, in the 1860s, Bassin created cardboard murals for the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior, but he himself could not embody them in the church due to deteriorating vision, and N. A. Koshelev painted the murals according to his sketches.
Basin’s activities were not limited to creative work and teaching. He repeatedly acted as an expert, in particular, when buying a collection of Princess Trubetskoy and works from the collection of the Dutch king Willem II for the Winter Palace and buying a private sculptural collection of the rector V. I. Demut-Malinovsky for the Academy of Arts. Bassin made efforts to preserve monuments of Russian architecture, including the preservation of twelve separate roofs on the building of the Twelve Collegiums, which were planned to be replaced by one common. He also translated from Italian into Russian a short course of anatomy for painters J. Del Medico.
The artist died in 1877. He was buried in St. Petersburg at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
