Description of the artwork «Self-portrait with bandaged ear and pipe»

Shortly before one of the most tragic incidents in the life of Vincent they Gauguin went for a traditional arlezianka entertainment – Christmas song lyrics. Then van Gogh was deeply impressed by a rather cruel ritual: a workshop especially after the victory over the bull the bullfighter solemnly handed the severed ear of the animal.

The relationship between van Gogh and Gauguin at the time was very tense. Despite the fact that cohabitation has become for them very productive in terms of creativity, they were always fighting and arguing. Periodic seizures of Vincent, his untidiness and disgusting character made life with him unbearable, his companion can not be called an angel, but to van Gogh, he was far away). On Christmas day they again had a big fight, and Gauguin once said he would leave. Vincent during this quarrel tried to attack him with a razor, however, encountering a relaxed and cool look, got embarrassed and hid in my room...

He stopped only when he reached the artery, causing severe bleeding. Further history is known: the bloody "gift" the prostitute, the police, the hasty departure of Gauguin, the hospital, and finally a mental hospital. Two "Self-portrait with bandaged ear Vincent wrote in a row – the wound healed pretty quickly (the second option). In both paintings the artist-shaven and neat. Apparently, they were written still in the hospital. But what distinguishes these portraits from earlier: a dramatic change in look. Ever wary he became absolutely insane. About the events of that Christmas night, he remembered little. It was clear only one thing: the dream of the commune of artists finally crumbled to dust. This frustration was the last straw, the last and fatal blow to the remnants of the mental health of van Gogh.
