Woman in white stockings

Painting, 1924, 117×89 cm

Description of the artwork «Woman in white stockings»

Woman in white stockings of Suzanne Valadon refers to many ladies depicted Toulouse-Lautrec. For example, reminiscent of black stockings (1, 2). Like Lautrec, Suzanne Valadon does not idealize and do not embellish the depicted woman. Catchy makeup, provocative clothes, relaxed pose, bright shoes, a bouquet under the chair suggests that the heroine - for example, the cabaret dancer. Toulouse-Lautrec often depicted ladies of this kind, followed his example and Suzanne Valadon.

Valadon and Lautrec were friends and lovers, he also appeared in the list of candidates for the role of father of her child, Maurice Utrillo. It Toulouse-Lautrec first saw pictures of Susanna before she was known in the Montmartre as an excellent model and their artistic experiments were kept secret. The artist praised her drawings and brought his protégé to Degas. Edgar Degas took Susanna as an equal, taught her and, in her assurances, was the only one she posed for, while not engaging with them in close relationship.

Dense contour, bright colors and the proximity model in white stockings to the viewer (the literal, physical, it seems that we are too close to pictured) stir up the situation, creating a stuffy, stuffy atmosphere of a place, which is probably the lady. However, as inherent in the works of post-impressionism, moralizing Susanne Valadon, we do not find. As well as beautifully to the audience it will not do, fair warning that eager to be in the picture "charming or adorned" will be severely disappointed.
