Their civilization was on the decline when the first human touched the replicator's consciousness, filling it with their thoughts, impressions, and memories.

People brought and showed their belongings, but the truly valuable ones were the stories and images stored in their memories. Hundreds of years ago, the replicators had more mobile bodies, but their current plant bodies had sensory hunger and apathy.

Ancient knowledge of matter control allowed replicators to create exact copies of any items they gave away in a short mind-exchange session.
