Pier in Gurzuf (Pier in Gurzuf)

Painting, 1914, 89×121 cm

Description of the artwork «Pier in Gurzuf (Pier in Gurzuf)»

Picture "Pier in Gurzuf" as the Crimean and other works of these years, written after the move (at the time) Korovin with his family in the Crimea. He first visited there in the late 1880s along with Savva Mamontov and was absolutely fascinated. At the first opportunity, he bought land in Gurzuf near the sea, built a house, and often came here. In the Crimea he could write.

In the First world war the reason for the move in the Crimean house was joyless. Happened accident with his son Aleksei. Then the artist himself was very ill. To go to the Crimea it was decided to improve their health. Indeed, the climate and nature had a good influence on the state of Korovin, returned to him the inspiration that he worked hard. The Crimean paintings of these years – the best examples of Korovin's impressionism.

The painting, "pier in Gurzuf" shows a girl at a table in the outdoor café on the dock. Behind her you can see the sailboat. Middle right – the people on the shore. Gorgeous color paintings. Konstantin Korovin often used the contrast of cold and warm tones in one image. The main thing here is the juxtaposition of the cool blue and purple and warm orange. These colors used in the interior, they play in the outfit of the girl: a blue and white dress and the warm color of the cap, put on the table items, outfits walking by the sea of people in the distance, in the sailboat with him in the landscape. The roof of the cafe, made up of a broad purple strokes, interspersed with warm wooden beams, it seems the sky, gradually turning into a lighter "sky outside". The airy space behind the walls of the cafe affects the thin passages of white, pink, lilac and blue tones. The picture is bathed in natural light, its reflections light up the floor play on the water and reflected in the smooth surface of the table. In this case, Korovin should be the traditional principles of the Impressionists, making the main characters of their work, color contrasts and light reflections. Impressionistic rule "random shot" followed. And the story itself seems a cause for transmission of light. However, the black color artist avoids, and he fits perfectly into the overall palette without weighing and without overshadowing it.

The General mood of the picture – bright, cheerful, Sunny. Korovin worked multidirectional strokes – somewhere in the wide, in other places thick and often forms all of the generic, space – radiant, blinking. Tangibly reflected ethnofuturist show: glistening ripples of water, the density of the stretched sails, the warmth of wood materials, the heat of the sun outside and the shade under the canopy. "Feel the beauty of paint, light – that's what art is expressed"– said Korovin and sought to achieve this in their works. Without a doubt, he succeeded.
