"Winter in the forest" one of the songs Levitan sketchy character written in the middle of the 1880-ies. Painting "Winter in the forest" is particularly interesting because the winter Levitan wrote very little, preferring other times of the year. The origin of the wolf in the picture

The wolf in this picture, written by friend Levitan Alexey Stepanov. As well as Levitan, he was a student at the Moscow school of painting, sculpture and architecture and an avid hunter. Stepanov collaborated with the magazine "Nature and hunting" and subsequently made his name with landscapes and genres in which animals play plot-the role: "Moose" (1890), "The cranes are flying"(1891), "After the hunt"(1894), "Morning Hello" (1897), etc. And immediately after school both a poor artist lived in cheap rooms in the neighborhood. Probably, at this time, the wolf was "instilled" Stepanov in the picture Levitan. Another friend, the artist Mikhail Nesterov, recalled: "In the winters he (Levitan ed.) roamed meblarskim full of all sorts of people. The last of these Chambre Garni had "England" on Tverskaya. In the biographical novel of Ivan Evdokimov "Levitan" the author puts into the mouth of the teacher Levitan, Savrasov this monologue: "Vasily Grigoryevich Perov asked me in the picture "Fowler"and "Hunters on a halt" to write the landscape, and I wrote. – He snorted lightly.
