Shatili. The village is a fortress.

Painting, 40×50 cm

Description of the artwork «Shatili. The village is a fortress.»

The village of Shatili is located in the Khevsureti region (Georgia), on the slope of the Main Caucasus Range, only 2 km from the border with Chechnya (along the Argun Gorge). This is a real fortification complex, consisting of approximately 60 defensive towers, which simultaneously serve as fortress walls and residential premises. The transitions between the houses are connected by numerous stairs and walkways, so you can move from one tower to another without even leaving them. The height of the towers is from 3 to 5 floors: cattle were usually kept on the first, various supplies on the next, and people lived on the top floor.

The history of this village knew many wars and attacks. In 1813, during the Caucasian War, many buildings were burned and destroyed by the Russian army. The largest battle in Shatili happened in 1843, when a Chechen detachment attacked the village, but its inhabitants managed to repel the attack. Over time, life in this village stopped, as the infrastructure is poorly developed here, and the roads are impassable in winter. In the middle of the 20th century, the villagers gradually moved to more flat territories and to the settlement of New Shatili, which is located slightly higher than the Old. Now no one lives in the historical village of Shatili, it is open for free access. The picturesque views from the upper floors of the towers will definitely not leave anyone indifferent. An application for inclusion of Shatili in the UNESCO World Heritage List is currently under consideration.

The road from Tbilisi to Shatili is about 150 kilometers: 50 km to Zhinvali is an asphalt road, and the next 100 kilometers is a dirt road. Several times a week, a shuttle bus runs from Didube metro station in Tbilisi to Shatili.
