Description of the artwork «Ujarma»

Ujarma is a fortified city located 40 kilometers from Tbilisi, on the road to Telavi through the amazingly beautiful Gombor Pass.
The remains of an ancient fortress are on top of a mountain range in the gorge of the Iori River. Artifacts found near the ramparts date from around the 12th century. BC.

From the beginning of the III century, the fortress became the residence of the Kartli kings. According to legend, at the beginning of the 4th century, the second of her three crosses, St. Nino, the Enlightener of Georgia, erected on this very spot. The first cross was erected on Mount Thoti, the third - in the monastery of Jvari.
The great Vakhtang Gorgasali, the founder of Tbilisi, made the fortress his summer residence and spent most of his time here. In the Juansheriani chronicle on this occasion it is written as follows: "... and ordered to build Ujarma and raise king Dachi in it, because he considered this area convenient for hunting and sheep breeding."
There was an associate of Tsar Vakhtang - the Persian Razhden, who converted to Christianity and was martyred for faith. Vakhtang ordered the construction of a temple in his honor, which exists in Ujarm to this day.
In the X century, the city was destroyed by Arabs. In the XII century. Tsar George III restored the castle and kept his treasury in it
Judging by the buildings, the fortress was also completed in the XVIII century.
In Soviet times, archaeological excavations and reconstruction took place here.
Until 2010, visiting the fortress was hampered by the lack of access roads. However, now, after the construction of the Telavi route, visiting Ujarma has become very convenient and is one of the most popular tourist routes.
