Dead City Mutso

Drawings and illustrations, 26.06.2019, 21×29 cm

Description of the artwork «Dead City Mutso»

The fortified city of Mutso is located in the gorge of the Ardoti River near Chechnya, about 160 km from Tbilisi and 12 km from a settlement of the same type - Shatili in the Khevsureti region. The height at which the fortress is located is 1579 m. The defensive and sentry 2- or 3-storey buildings are grouped into three blocks. They belonged to three genera: Dayauri, Torgva, Cholokashvili. Precise information about the date of construction of the fortress was not preserved, but historians believe that this fortification dates back to the reign of St. Tamara or a little earlier period.

The location of the fortress is very competent and thoughtful: on the sides there are sheer cliffs, under the feet there is a mountain river, and in front there are stone towers with armed khevsurs. In fact, the mountains themselves, where Mutso is, is an impregnable fortress created by nature. A path carved into the rocks leads to the city. Residential buildings, as well as in Shatili, are connected by walls and towers into a single closed complex.
In the city itself and not far from the fortress walls there are burial grounds - separate small stone rooms without an entrance, but with a window, characteristic of the necropolises of the North Caucasus, found in Ossetia and Kabardino-Balkaria. In the opening you can see the lying human bones. It is believed that these crypts were erected during the plague of 1850. Each diseased, so as not to endanger others, independently went to die in the designated place. The appearance of burial grounds also raises questions because there is an ordinary cemetery near the fortress with large vertical slate slabs on the graves. From the top of the opposite slope overlooks the entire complex of fortifications against the backdrop of a breathtaking mountain landscape.
