Description of the artwork «Metekhi. Old Tbilisi»
Metekhi is a historic district of Tbilisi on a high rock overhanging the bank of the Kura River. The main attraction of Metekhi is the Assumption Church, which is picturesquely set on the crest of the cliff, in which the holy martyr Shushanik, a Christian, killed by her fire-worshiping husband in the 5th century, rests.

Many historical facts are connected with the Metekh Cathedral. In 1195, before the Shamkor battle, Queen Tamara prayed here. In 1235, the church standing on this spot became a victim of fire. It was restored in 1278-1289. King Demeter II. In 1660, lightning fell on the cathedral. The damaged church was restored by the Muslim king Vakhtang V, after which a powder warehouse was placed there. The same function was performed by the cathedral in the 1690s, when Erekle I Nazarelikh handed over to the Persians the cathedral along with the fortress. The cathedral was restored, the holding of prayers was restored at the request of Tsar Erekle the Second in 1748-1753. In 1961, the playground in front of the temple was decorated with the equestrian statue of Vakhtang Gorgasali.
