Description of the artwork «Painting 1946»

One day Francis bacon intended to write a bird settled on the grass in the field. "Suddenly the lines that I drew, began to hint at something completely different." He said the late art critic David Sylvester. – "From this hint came the picture. I'm not going to write it. I wouldn't thought of that. It just happened – like a series of coincidences that pile up on one another". What happened bacon called simply: "Painting 1946". David Sylvester spoke more simply: "The butcher-shop picture" – "butcher's shop".

In the circular room, draped in curtains the color of fresh meat, framed by the meat carcasses from the comfort of a man. He's dark, dapper in his buttonhole boutonniere yellow, leg curled over his leg. Round steel construction (those found in a casino) closes the space in front of him into a kind of arena. Bacon puts on black: upper part of the head men hidden in the dense shade of a black umbrella. It is not excluded, however, that the top of the head to a gentleman simply does not.

"Painting 1946" can be called an early anthology of classical bekonovskie nightmares. On a hunch, the artist has hit the jackpot. Subconscious helpfully built for him in the line of a number of images and solutions which will occupy an important place in bekonovskie iconography. In a sense, this painting bacon pointed out the direction for the years ahead.

Big fan of ancient drama, he again and again will close part of the space in a circle or a cube, removing this geometric reservations the role of the stage, amphitheater, arena, sometimes a Gladiator, sometimes a circus. He will generously feed the public with meat, finding the paired carcasses special beauty. Living an independent life mouths become his obsession, umbrellas – a favorite accessory. By the way, this is the debut - the appearance of the umbrella has provoked from critics the greatest number of interpretations. Someone had found the dark gentleman – Neville Chamberlain, too peace-loving Prime Minister, who often appeared in public with an umbrella, and even turned on some time this innocent object into a symbol of appeasement of Nazi aggression. Someone called the umbrella "in the usual acceptance of the phallic symbolism of the Surrealists". Someone reasonably judged that the umbrella is the perfect tool to hide the eyes and mouth stress – technique, which became bacon's almost a business card.

There is, however, something that distinguishes "Painting 1946" from most bekonovskie paintings. By the standards of bacon, it's unexpectedly straightforward statement, hardly it requires complex interpretations. Its essence is exhaustively formulated in the title. What time is painting. The twentieth century continues. If you are going for dinner, make sure that you are not on the menu.
