He studied at the Studio Yu Madernieka and the Central school of technical drawing Stieglitz in St. Petersburg.
He worked as a drawing teacher in the Petersburg school, was Director of gymnasium of Shuvalovo–Ozerki.
In 1920, JC Grotus returned to Latvia.
He was a member of unity of Independent artists, also a member of the Board, participated in the exhibitions of this group (1921 – 34).
In 1984 he organized a memorial exhibition.
The artist worked as a teacher in the 25th Riga elementary school.
JC Grotus was a very productive artist (about 2000 works).
