The Academy of Arts was established by a decision of the Senate on November 6, 1757 during the reign of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna in St. Petersburg on the initiative of the great Russian scientist M.V. Lomonosov and the famous enlightener of the time I.I. Shuvalova.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the Academy was the only higher educational institution in Russia.

During its existence, the Museum of the Academy of Arts has concentrated within its walls a most valuable collection of Western European and Russian paintings, drawings, sculptures, architectural models and drawings, which studied all generations of students.
