Express it with flowers. Viennese still-lifes from Waldmüller to Klimt

Exhibition July 22 − September 30, 2018
From a luxurious bouquet to the usual thistle and sunflowers of Klimt - throughout the century floral painting has undergone a huge transformation. The center was Vienna, where in the XIX century this genre reached an unsurpassed variety and significance. Exhibition"Express it with flowers" traces the love of the inhabitants of the Austrian capital to floral still-lifes - from the time preceding the Biedermeier to the modern era.

The first flourishing of floral painting fell on the Biedermeier period with its magnificent floral arrangements. At the end of the century, she again became fashionable, especially with the works of artists Olga Vizinger-Florian and Marie Egner. This genre opened the way for women to the world of art. And, finally, Viennese modern artists such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele included unique floral motifs in their works.

Flower paintings show much more than the history of artistic styles. They talk about social changes, the exhilaration of exotic plants and native alpine flora, the splendor of the Ringstrasse era and the fragility of mankind. The exhibition includes works from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century and, besides paintings, also includes porcelain and sculpture. Further enrichment of the exhibition is complemented by the choice of contemporary art.
