Jongkind

Ian Bartold Jongkind (1819 – 1891) was a key figure in European painting of the XIX century. He was the linchpin in the development of modern painting and a true pioneer of impressionism. Working in the Dutch realist tradition, Jongkind one of the first gave rise to the impressionism in France. He was born in the Netherlands, but a large part of his life spent in France, where he became friends with Claude Monet, Alfred Saleem, Eugene Boudin and Camille Pissarro. Dordrechts Museum has dedicated an impressive exhibition of creativity of Jongkind and several of his famous artist friends.

In the exhibition paintings by Jongkind along with several key impressionist. In the spotlight – the early years of the painter in the Hague, his views of the Normandy coast, the time spent in Paris, and the scene favorite Dordrecht and its surroundings. A small selection of watercolours demonstrates the virtuosity of quick and accurate strokes of the painter. Many of the exhibits on display in the Netherlands for the first time.

This year Dordrechts Museum – one of the city's oldest galleries in the Netherlands, celebrates its 175th anniversary. The exhibition is timed to this date.
