Kings and knights. The Romanovs and their love for the Middle Ages

Exhibition Center Hermitage Amsterdam invites you to visit the exhibition “Kings and Knights. The Romanovs and Their Love for the Middle Ages ".


The large-scale exposition presents magnificent works of medieval art from the collection of the State Hermitage and tells about the interest in the world of the Middle Ages on the part of Russian emperors of the 18th-19th centuries. Paintings and drawings, knightly armor and samples of Western European weapons, monuments of medieval applied art, manuscripts, stained-glass windows, as well as pieces of furniture, glass and ceramic products, porcelain, tapestries, fabrics - more than three hundred exhibits from the collection of the State Hermitage - tell about the Middle Ages, combining the images of the era itself and the prevailing ideas about it at the end of the 18th and throughout the 19th centuries.

The exhibition includes paintings, among which recently restored: the triptych "Adoration of the Magi" by Hugo van der Hoes (1435/40 - 1482) and the painting "Garden of Earthly Delights", created by a follower of Hieronymus Bosch (1450 - 1516). Visitors will be able to see “Landscape with the Legend of St. Christopher "by Jan Mundane (1500 - 1560)," Portrait of a Woman "by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472 - 1553); watercolors by Adolf Menzel (1815 - 1905) (Tournament in Berlin, Tournament in Magdeburg, Departure of knights with drawn swords and others), graphic works by Albrecht Durer (1471 - 1528) ("Knight, Death and the Devil"), Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472 - 1553) ("Household scene. Tournament") and others, as well as engravings from the middle of the 19th century.
