Francisco Goya. Three readings: woman, war and faces

Exhibition September 29, 2020 − January 3, 2021
Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and the National Museum of Engraving present an exhibitionFrancisco Goya. Three readings: woman, war and faces ".

Visitors will be able to familiarize themselves with the world's masterpieces of engraving, in which the author critically reflects on three topics: the role of women, the chronicle of war, the study of physiognomy.

The first section of the exposition concerns women. Goya views women from different points of view: in everyday activities, in moments of leisure and entertainment, or as an object of male violence, victims of abuse, subordinate to patriarchal desires; while not forgetting about strong women who are able to protect their children, their families and even their patriotic ideals. The second part of the exhibition presents the horror of war and its aftermath, with a selection of prints in which the universal man is the main feature. There are no gangs, no moral judgments, only characters at the limit of their capabilities, capable of any atrocity in order to survive. The final part analyzes the relationship of characters, persons with the artist's interpretation of modern physiognomy. Physiognomy theories renew the parallelism of human expressions and animals. Goya creates faces that are far from the expressionless appearance of the courtiers, whose mask is hypocrisy.
