In the land of monsters. Leopold Chauvet (1870-1940)

Exhibition March 10 − September 13, 2020
Museum d'Orsay invites you to visit the exhibition“In the land of monsters. Leopold Chauvet (1870-1940) ".

The exposition introduces the personality, life and work of Leopold Chauvet, a professional doctor, author of books for children and adults, a unique self-taught artist: sculptor and illustrator. Viewers will see 18 sculptures and 100 drawings from the collection donated to the museum by the artist's grandson.

Being an extraordinary creative person, Chauveau got acquainted with sculpture around 1905, when he was already studying medicine. Since 1907, monsters have become the leitmotif of his work, both in sculpture and in drawing. His creations are often cute, awkward and as if surprised by the very fact of their existence. It seems that they came out of his unconscious and are faithful companions for the author, residents of an imaginary world in which he will find refuge. The exposition is structured in two directions: on the one hand, the personality, life and work of Leopold Chauvet, and on the other, his universe for children, which will enchant the youngest visitors.
