The New Carlsberg Glyptotek hosts an exhibition“A collector in the shadows. Pinakothek Helge Jacobsen ".
Visitors can see a magnificent collection of French painting masterpieces, as well as photographs and archival material from the life of a “collector in the shadows”. Painters on display include Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet and the collector's favorite artist, Paul Gauguin.
The name Helge Jacobsen (1882-1946) is unknown to most people today. He is overshadowed by his famous father, the brewer Carl Jacobsen. But Helge Jacobsen, thanks to his position as museum director and chairman of the foundation, was invaluable to the life of Danish art. Jacobsen lived quietly in his luxurious villa in Wedbeck, kept aloof in his relations with people and called himself a "fragile vessel." In the late 1910s, he announced his intention to create a collection of masterpieces of contemporary French painting. The result of his work was the creation of the most important collection of paintings and key exhibits of the Danish Glyptotek.
