Kete Kolwitz and the art of resistance

The German artist Kete Kolwitz, known for her engravings and drawings, had a long career, living and working during the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), World War I and World War II. Throughout her life, she focused her images on the rights of workers, the urban poor, war, the joys and sorrows of motherhood, and the inevitability of death.
The exhibition “Kete Kolwitz and the Art of Resistance” presents powerful visual messages that she created as a means of counteracting or suppressing political and social oppression. These were messages that she sought to distribute widely and inexpensively, and this is one of the reasons she was attracted to prints: prints could be made multiple using only paper and a copper plate, a piece of wood or a lithographic stone.
