Arabesque

Exhibition December 14, 2019 − March 22, 2020
Like the notes of a melody or the movements of a dancer, the line of an arabesque in a picture or poster unfolds in a freely developing form, which is both distinctive and variable. Based on stylized motifs of floral ornaments, such as interwoven mustaches and leaves, the arabesque line has long admired its decorative qualities and extraordinary flexibility.

During the nineteenth century, many European artists explored the creativity of arabesques in various media. Exhibition "Arabesque"begins with very ornate, detailed, bizarre works of German romantics with strong references to literary sources; then proceeds to historical adaptations and interpretations directly inspired by Islamic designs that travelers such as Owen Jones helped make accessible to Western audiences; and ends with picturesque experiments of Nabi and Art Nouveau artists, thoroughly informed about modern events in music and dance.
