Wilhelm Hammershoe and Danish Painting of the 19th Century

Exhibition January 21 − March 26, 2020
The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum presents a full-scale exhibition of Danish painting, "Wilhelm Hammershoe and Danish Painting of the 19th Century." The exhibition displays 40 works by painters.

One of the most famous artists of Denmark, Wilhelm Hammershöy (1864-1916) painted close acquaintances, landscapes and muted interiors. He was heavily influenced by 17th-century Dutch genre painting and earned the nickname "North Vermeer." The works demonstrate the nostalgia inherent in modern urban residents.
In recent years, the international popularity of the painter is growing, and large Western art museums acquire his paintings.
