Bugro and America

Exhibition November 9, 2019 − March 15, 2020
Exhibition "Bugro and America"shows more than forty paintings by the French artist William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825–1905).

The exhibition explores the artist’s popularity during the Golden Age of America, from the late 1860s to the early 1900s. During this period, owning a painting by the artist was a requirement for any American who wanted to be considered a serious collector: the artist’s great canvases brought a sense of classical sophistication to new collections. Their chaste, sensual virgins, Rafaelian madonnas, and peasant children reflected religious beliefs, sexual morals, social problems, and desires of that period.
