Mariette Russo-Vermette: modernist artist

The National Gallery of Canada hosts the exhibition "Mariette Russo-Vermette: modernist artist". The author, a pioneer of textile art, is famous for his massive tapestries of bright colors, which act as murals and sculptures. Playing with the magic of volume and texture, she created magnificent, luminous tapestries filled with vertical and geometric shapes. In her sculptural works, non-traditional materials, such as optical fibers and fur, bonded with weft threads, were used.
Russo-Vermette was born in Quebec in 1926. She studied at the School of Fine Arts in Quebec and at the Auckland College of Sand Art in California. She has exhibited in Canada, in the United States, in several European countries and in Japan. Her tapestries are kept in many large public and private collections. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and an officer of the Order of Canada. She died in 2006.
