Herrenberg Altar 500: Yerg Ratgeb

Exhibition September 27, 2019 − January 12, 2020
Five hundred years ago, Yerg Ratgeb painted Herrenberg's monumental altar for the Common Life Brothers Cathedral.

In 1517, the Brothers of Common Life ordered the artist Jörg Ratgeb to have an altar for the main altar in the Church of Our Lady in Herrenberg.

In 1890, the Herrenberg Board of Trustees and the Civil Committee decided to sell the altar, which is not only considered obsolete, but also somewhat offensive, to the Royal Antique Collection in Stuttgart for 5,000 marks. From there, he entered the State Gallery in 1924.

Exhibition "Herrenberg Altar 500: Yerg Ratgeb"provides an excellent opportunity to shed light on the multifaceted history of the altar and demonstrate it as an outstanding example of the cultural heritage of Baden-Württemberg.
