Michaela Eichwald

Exhibition June 4 − November 8, 2020
Educated in literature and philosophy, the Berlin artist and writer Michaela Eichwald (Germany, b. 1967) works primarily as an artist. This Exhibition, the first US museum presentation of the artist, combines painting, sculpture and collages over the past 10 years of her practice.

Combining abstraction and figure, Eichwald’s tightly layered paintings refuse to easily join a particular style or historical movement. Their unusual surfaces - printed canvas or artificial leather - carry an alchemical combination of acrylic, oil, tempera, spray paint, graphite and varnish. In large or small formats, her work combines smooth strokes and quick spots, from which figurative forms and fragments of text sometimes appear. Although gestures and crude markings may resemble post-war painting styles such as Tachism, Neo-Expressionism, or the Japanese Gutai, her paintings resist a simple reference to a specific time or genealogy, instead combining and mixing the history of painting styles and techniques.
