Introducing yourself: portraits from the Bass collection

Exhibition May 29 − October 20, 2019
"Introducing yourself: portraits from the Bass collection"presents an overview of portraits from the museum's collection in a dialogue with more modern acquisitions. Elections include grouping works from the beginning of the 16th century to the beginning of the 2000s, including paintings, photographs and sculptural, mixed installations.

The exhibition explores the portrait genre defined by art historian John Gear as an image "in which the artist is associated with the personality of his person and is concerned about his or her characteristic as a personality." The ideas about the works show how this genre has been used throughout history to this day as a means of visual confirmation of one’s identity, status or individuality.
