Mary Armstrong: Terms of Faith

Exhibition September 9 − December 8, 2019
AT "Terms of faith»Presents twenty-two landscapes painted by Mary Armstrong over the past seven years. Nature and memory inspire her with multi-layered, complex compositions. Oil and wax depict the forces of nature, imaginary and real, in seascapes. For Armstrong, swirling streams, sunlit mouths and especially rising waves are "an ideal visual metaphor for change, desired and terrible, destructive and reviving, personal and political."

Her desert landscapes illustrate the mountain ranges in the deserted Anza-Borrego State Park in California, where the artist has been visiting since the early 1990s. In these oil pastels, Armstrong replaces the stormy waters of Maine with swirling clouds over the Borrego Valley, capturing the changing relationship between earth and sky.
