Lubaina Chemid: Those downstairs

Exhibition June 26 − October 6, 2019
New Museum of Contemporary Art presents an exhibition "Lubaina Chemid: Those downstairs".

A pioneer of the British Black Arts movement in the 1980s and 90s, Himid has long advocated marginal stories. His drawings, paintings, sculptures and textile works criticize the consequences of colonialism and cast doubt on the invisibility of people of color in art and the media.

While large historical narratives are often the driving force behind his images and installations, Chemid's work beckons the audience, drawing attention to the flimsy details of everyday life. Vivid, graphic and rich in color and symbolic referents, his images resemble historical paintings and British satirical cartoons of the eighteenth century.
