One: Titus Kaphar

Exhibition June 21 − October 13, 2019
"Shift of sight"Tita Kaphara draws attention to stories from the past that highlight the conditions in the present.

Kaphar finished the picture, a free copy of the seventeenth century family portrait of the Dutch artist Frans Gals, on stage during a TED show in 2017. In the dramatic finale, he took a large brush and began to erase many of the figures in the picture in broad strokes of white paint, leaving the black boy in the center of the composition. By shifting the viewer's eye to a boy who is believed to be a family servant, Kaphar draws attention to people who are often deliberately ignored in historical records for reasons related to race, class, or gender. Thus, he justifies the need to write new, more honest and meaningful stories.
