Michael Paxton Black lungs

Exhibition June 7 − August 4, 2019
«Black lungs"- an exhibition of the Chicago artist Michael C. Paxton - large-scale paintings and works on paper, based on the study of slides on the impact of black lung disease on the miners.

Paxton creates fields the size of a column of chalk, coal, gypsum and acrylic on untreated canvas, which cover this ongoing devastation of coal to indicate the place and people who are not often heard in contemporary art. Thanks to a well-established working process of sizes and materials, an open approach to the development of each painting creates a colorful and awkward work of aggressively creating a brand that refuses to stand still. Contrary to expectations, his work surrounds otherness when he is looking for the exact point at which his deep Appalachian heritage can create a place for the heart’s desire to talk about something important, personal and at the same time as common as dirt.
