The mystery of the material. Kirchner, Heckel and Schmidt-Rothluf

Exhibition June 26 − October 13, 2019
At a special exhibition"The Mystery of the Material" Shtedelevsky Art Institute examines the relationship between woodcut and wood sculpture in the works of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 - 1938), Erich Heckel (1883 - 1970) and Karl Schmidt-Rotluf (1884 - 1976). The starting point of the show was a tree that is more closely associated with German expressionism than any other material. Artists were attracted by its unevenness and grain, different shades and degree of hardness.

After the three artists formed the Brücke group in Dresden in 1905, woodcutting became one of their most important artistic materials. The exhibition features about ninety woodcuts, five blocks of woodcuts and a series of sculptures. The exhibition addresses the special approach of artists to the technique of printing and processing material.
