The Invisible World of Charles Doyle

Exhibition June 15 − September 23, 2019
The indisputable atmosphere of mystery surrounds the life and work of Charles Doyle (1833-1893), whose artist talent is often marred by his famous illustrator brother Richard Doyle and his more famous son, writer and author of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The art of Charles Doyle, hidden by his family for his heavy drinking and subsequent institutionalization in several shelters, was often viewed as the work of a madman. In fact, Doyle's fantastic watercolors stem from the long tradition of fairytale painting in Britain.

The “Invisible World of Charles Doyle” exhibition features sixteen drawings from the Huntington collection, demonstrating Doyle’s unique and illustrative interpretation of this popular Victorian theme.
