Every living thing: animals in Japanese art

Exhibition September 22 − December 8, 2019
Exhibition "Every living thing: animals in Japanese art"glorifies one of the most characteristic and compelling aspects of Japanese art: the image of animals.

Japanese reverence for nature and the place of animals in this kingdom is expressed in sculpture, painting, lacquer, ceramics, metalworking, cloisonne printing and wood engraving.

Lions, dogs, horses, oxen, cats, fish, insects, birds, dragons, phoenixes - warm and cold-blooded animals, real and imagined - carefully and beautifully presented in countless works from ancient 6th-century clay sculpture to modern art.

The exhibition is largely based on the LACMA permanent collection and includes masterpieces from Japanese and American public and private collections, some works of art are exhibited for the first time.
