Ursula von Raidingsward: Outline of Emotion

Exhibition March 22 − July 28, 2019
National Museum of Women's Art presents an exhibition "Ursula von Raidingsward: Outline of Emotion".

This landmark exhibition of the monumental sculptures of Ursula von Raydingsvard (b. 1942, Densen, Germany) highlights the process by which the artist gives her ideas and emotions a visual form. Expressive cedar sculptures are accompanied by poetic works of cellulose, leather, flax and other organic materials. The Outline of Emotion was the most ambitious presentation of Von Reidhardsvard's art in the United States and her first solo exhibition in Washington DC.

Each of the large-scale sculptures includes a time-consuming, but intuitive process that can take about a year. Wearing protective gear and armed with heavy machinery, Von Reidhardsvard and her team sawed, cut, laid, glued, and labeled the work with graphite before assembling their final forms. Towering vertical structures, stretching floor works and extensive wall structures inspire awe and incline towards introspection.
