Art Museum of the University of Kentucky: Lighting

Exhibition June 1 − December 8, 2019
The superb quality of light has attracted artists for centuries. This exhibition, taken from the permanent collection of the University of Kentucky Museum of Art, explores the literal and metaphorical meaning of lighting. Other works include sunny landscapes, a Russian icon with gold leaves, a Tiffany lamp, a curious picture commissioned by the Institute of Bituminous Coal.

Italian Baroque painter Giovanni Andrea Donducci, in her 17th century painting “The Virgin and Child and Saint Lucy” explores the traditional theme of religious education. Rockwell Kent's “Bread of Plenty” of 1945 was intended to extol the benefits of coal in a work that is not typical of both the artist’s modernist style and his left-wing politics. French symbolist painter Maurice Denis captures a sublime moment at the end of the day when the sun covers the glittering gold above the surface of the bay in his Breton landscape of 1891.
