Tiepolo in Milan: Lost frescoes by Palazzo Archinto

The Frick Collection presents an exhibition "Tiepolo in Milan: Lost frescoes of the Palazzo Archinto".
The exhibition features a collection of paintings, drawings, prints and photographs relating to the first significant project of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770) outside Venice, a series of ceiling frescoes for Palazzo Archinto in Milan. The murals were painted between 1730 and 1731 by order of Count Carlo Archinto, one of the most prominent patrons and intellectuals of Milan in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Unfortunately, Palazzo Archinto was bombed during World War II, and its interior was completely destroyed.
The exposition includes more than fifty items from collections in the US and Europe, it presents five Tiepolo preparatory works: three paintings (among them an oil sketch from the Frick's collection of “Perseus and Andromeda”) and two drawings. Additional drawings and several books of illustrations by the artist are presented, as well as black and white photographs taken between 1897 and the end of the 1930s, the only remaining pictures of finished frescoes on the spot.
