Dousti Bonje: Piercing the inner wall

Exhibition April 11 − September 8, 2019
WATER INTERNAL WALL: THE ART OF COMING A BONGE

Dousti Bonje is the widely recognized first Mississippi artist who worked consistently in a modern style. She created a collection of works that shifted from the figurative and cubist images of her house in Mississippi in the 1930s, through a period of surrealism and in the style of abstract expressionism, which defined her mature work.

Through paintings, drawings and sculptures thisExhibition traces the growth of Bonje, both artistic and spiritual, and reveals the sphere of influence and inspiration from the Gulf Coast, the scene of New Orleans and the New York school.

This exhibition brings together the work of Bonje's entire career — both from private and public collections — to tell the story of one woman’s tough devotion to creative life, culminating in a number of works showing her great contribution to American art after World War II.
