Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Resolutely modern

Exhibition October 9, 2019 − January 27, 2020
The last French exhibition, dedicated to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, was held in 1992. Since then, many curators have sought to place his works in the "culture of Montmartre." Context and folklore Moulin Rouge, Lautrec's aesthetic, poetic and even political goals have disappeared from view.

As the correspondence shows, Manet and Degas gave him the opportunity, from the mid-1880s, to transform their powerful naturalism into a more acute and caustic style. In the works of Toulouse-Lautrec the narrative element is present more than one might think. This is especially evident in works created closer to the end of life.

Exhibition“Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Resolutely modern » in the Orsay Museum will offer visitors close contact with the work of the person who influenced all modern art.
