Garth Williams: Illustrator of the Century

Exhibition May 4 − August 11, 2019
Most of us at one time or another fell under the magnetic spell of American illustrator Garth Williams (1912-1996): as readers of childhood, as parents, grandparents, or professionals involved in youth and their books.

Williams, who was born in New York and grew up in London, illustrated many childhood classics for a career that lasted almost fifty years and brought a new level of virtuosity and fun to American children's books and their illustrations.

"Garth Williams: Illustrator of the Century"- the largest retrospective of the artist's works ever collected. In addition to presenting original work for twenty-eight of his favorite books, the exhibition also explores such less well-known aspects of an artist's career, like the work as an apprentice of the London portrait painter and cartoonist from New York, and Williams' occasional foray into advertising.
